PORTFOLIO OVERVIEW

Coppin State University Facilities Assessment

Founded in 1900, Coppin State is a Historically Black College and University and fully accredited institution offering 53 majors and nine graduate-degree programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, and nursing. It is one of 12 institutions comprising the University System of Maryland.

A total of 13 buildings constructed between 1961 and 2015 and associated site features occupy the 65-acre urban campus. Given the variety of their age, use, and construction type, Coppin State initiated a comprehensive facilities assessment, with the goal of reducing the current backlog of deferred maintenance and projecting capital expenditures over the next 10 years.  The scope of work, which was accomplished between May and December 2021, encompassed a detailed review and analysis of existing conditions, including exterior enclosure; structural, MEP, fire and life safety systems; and site accessibility.

Axias produced individual reports for each building and site area containing recommendations and high-level cost estimates for items of deferred maintenance, capital replacement, and improvements. The reports will play a vital role in the university’s decision-making process as to which buildings should continue to be maintained, renovated, replaced, or abandoned. We also developed a project executive summary that was distributed to university stakeholders for review.
