Owner: National Institutes of Health | Services: Cost Estimating

Axias has worked with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for over ten years, providing cost estimating and value engineering services on multiple projects at NIH facilities in Washington, DC, and North Carolina. These projects include:

This space repurposing project included interior renovation and MEP upgrades to adapt the building to current space needs.

This eight-story addition to the NIH Clinical Center will house multiple departments, providing scientists, physicians, and patients with spaces that inspire, heal, and propel innovation. Axias verified and validated the NIH-approved program of requirements for the new building and renovations to the existing clinical center. Our team reviewed and updated estimated costs and provided order-of-magnitude budgetary cost estimates for the lab and medical equipment anticipated for the new spaces.

Constructed in 2000, the Vaccine Research Center (Building 40) on NIH’s Bethesda campus houses several research laboratories conducting research that facilitates the development of effective vaccines for HIV/AIDS and other human diseases. The addition of Building 40A doubles available laboratory space, including specialty laboratories, and adds additional support spaces. Axias was engaged to facilitate a formal value engineering workshop for the project led by a certified value specialist and supported by a cold team of engineers, architects, cost estimators, and specialty consultants to analyze the design development submission and recommend value-enhancing ideas.

Axias provided concept estimates as part of the master planning effort for the proposed facility. The cost estimates included multiple options and combinations related to building out a new 51,000-square-foot Cell Processing facility and adding parking and utilities.

The NIEHS, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is one of 27 research institutes and centers managed by NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its mission is to discover how the environment affects people and promote healthier lives. This project included expanding the lab capabilities for Animal Research for the NIEHS Neurobehavioral Animal Research Core and designing an animal biosafety level 2 (ABSL-2) facility.
