Smithsonian | Restoration of the Historic Core

Owner: Smithsonian Institution | Services: Cost Estimating, Scheduling

The Smithsonian Institution Building, “The Castle,” and the Arts and Industry Building (AIB) comprise the Smithsonian’s Historic Core. Both buildings need major revitalization with HVAC improvements and security and life safety upgrades. A new central utility plant will be constructed for improved mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

The revitalization project also includes exterior and interior restoration, providing efficient and accessible space for visitors and staff. Public spaces will be restored to their original period of significance as prior renovations have diminished their original proportions and appearance.

Axias provided cost estimating from conceptual design, starting with an initial cost model, through the concept and schematic design, and early construction package bid estimates. We also provided scheduling services to evaluate the phasing and constructability of the project.
