Fairfax County Sully Community Center

Owner: Fairfax County | Services: Cost estimating, Value Engineering

Design by RRMM Architects, the Sully Community Center is a 36,000-square-foot community center that also houses the Sully Senior Center and offers various services, programs, and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities. The community facility hosts afterschool programs and Fairfax County Park Authority camps and provides facility rentals, fitness classes, gym sports, meeting spaces, partnership garden plots, therapeutic recreation services, and technology and computer instruction. The community center also features a 4,000-square-foot healthcare suite providing comprehensive primary healthcare services, particularly for those with difficulty accessing healthcare.

The project pursued LEED Gold certification and aimed to achieve net-zero energy status through its sustainable design approach, including a large solar array on the roofs to generate all the electrical power needed for the facility.

The Axias team provided cost estimating services from the initial rough order of magnitude through 100% construction documents. We also conducted a cost analysis for the added solar array and facilitated a value engineering workshop, generating 97 cost-saving ideas and total life cycle cost savings of $470,000.
