Merriweather Post Pavilion is an outdoor concert venue located within Symphony Woods, a 40-acre parcel of preserved land in the heart of the planned community of Columbia.
The multi-year, multi-phase project encompasses additions and renovations to the main stage and the addition of a 25,000-square-foot office and warehouse building for venue operations staff and performers. Associated site development involved a multitude of walkways, landscaped areas, retaining walls, concession stands, and public restrooms. JP2 was the architect for this project. Adjacent Symphony Woods features the new Butterfly Building for guest services; an X-shaped, glass-and-mirror, 6,000-square-foot structure for food concessions; an art gallery; and a 5,700-square-foot deck. Mahan Rykiel and Martha Schwartz Partners comprised the design team for this portion of improvements.
The nearby playground is home to the Caterpillar, an interactive landscape amenity in the form of an 800-foot-long, 10-foot diameter, plant-covered tube that serves as the boundary between Merriweather and Symphony Woods. Among its features are audio, art opportunities, mist, and lights.
