Phillips House Renovation
Location: Washington, DC
Client: Bowie Gridley Architects
Owner: The Phillips Collection
Size: 21,780 SF
Axias Role: Cost Estimating
Phillips House is America’s oldest modern art museum. Axias provided cost estimating services for the addition of a rooftop mechanical penthouse to the main building, a Georgian Revival house dating to 1890. This was done to replace an inefficient 40-year-old system and protect the building and art below by enclosing all-new MEP equipment.
As part of this award-winning project, the fourth floor was reconfigured. The new design adopted the same height as the existing rooftop skylight added in the 1930s to create a studio space.
The new roof is laid back from the face of the building to further differentiate it from the adjacent skylight, though its new copper shingles compliment the skylight’s large-scale flat copper panels.
